IT’S P ‘ART’ Y TIME IN NORTHPORT

Northport is the gallery center of the Leelanau peninsula with six major art galleries, four located just blocks from each other in the village and two more a short drive north of the village. Each has its own unique style and collection of new and exciting art for visitors' enjoyment. To celebrate the season, the galleries are each hosting parties simultaneously on July 13th from 5 to 9pm.

The Painted Horse Gallery of Northport is the ultimate destination for true art lovers! This new gallery proudly presents a collection of unique paintings, giclees, dimensional art and hand-crafted furniture by locally and internationally known artists. The perfect place to begin or continue your love affair with great art.  Bonnie Marris and Woody Palmer, artists/owners, 106 Waukazoo, Northport. 386-7209.

Wright Gallery is featuring 4 two-person exhibitions this summer season beginning with Northport artist Helaine Milliman and San Francisco painter Alexis Grant opening Friday June 29th.  On July 13th avian artist Greg Garman will be opening with Indianapolis artist Dorothy Alig. Traverse City native Jean Larson will be featured on July 27th along with Pier Wright. All shows are up for approximately 2 weeks and artists are normally present for the opening reception. The final exhibit August 17th will feature the stamp assemblages of Jordan Scott. Please call the gallery for further information at 386-5594, or see www.wrightgallery.com. Wright Gallery is located at 210 Mill Street across from the Eat Spot.

Joppich's Bay Street Gallery is featuring a selection of works by invited Master Potters of Michigan including John Glick, Ed Risak, Robert Pipenburg and more. Large scale oil painting by Bruce Winslow of Midland, and major paper paintings by Chicago artist Roland Poska are on display. Many new collage and watercolor works by resident owner/artist Edee Joppich are shown as well as glowing Leelanau landscapes by Gwen Tomkow. The 27th season for Joppich's Bay Street Gallery has been called the best yet. Phone: 386-9430.

Rantz Gallery. 208 east Third Street

Located in a quaint historic house at the entrance to the Marina Park on Third Street, the gallery is home to the paintings of long time resident artist Gene Rantz and unique – artful jewelry and fiber designs by Judy Mastick Rantz. Gene is celebrating 25 years exploring and painting the beautiful Leelanau countryside. His work has become quite collectable through out the country and especially appreciated by those who enjoy discovering museum quality art in unassuming places such as quiet Northport.

Judy's jewelry and fiber pieces are a culmination of thirty years work in Northport. The quiet and peaceful charm of this small village is infectious, inspiring the many artists and craft people drawn here and manifesting in the works produced. Phone: 386-7734.

By The Bight Art Gallery and Studio is a short 2 mile drive north of Northport on County Road 640 (Woolsey Lake Road) housing the unique and diverse art works of artists/owners Tom and Carole Bowker. Their art is inspired and derived by direct observation of the lush Leelanau environment. Their one-of-a-kind works combine traditional and non-traditional uses of materials to elicit an aesthetic response that is not easily found elsewhere. Enjoy your visit at our country gallery. Share the rich experiences and impressions created by Tom and Carole and take home a piece of the wonders of Leelanau from "By The Bight". Phone: 231-386-7019.

Quiet Dove Art Gallery. Nestled in the woods, 5.5 miles north of town, the Quiet Dove Art Gallery features the original artwork of artists/owners Cynthia Franseen and John Kristansen. John paints richly colored still lives and wonderfully imagined landscapes. He also creates small, whimsical sculptures carved from wood and embellished with pyrography. In her work, Cindy expresses the beauty that she finds in life's details and intricacies. Her mediums are varied and include beadwork, embroidery, miniature pencil/colored pencil drawings, stone poems, and miniature dolls. And new for this year are her beautiful and intricate papercuttings. The Quiet Dove is located at 14691 E Woolsey Lake Rd (County road 629) 2 miles south of the Grand Traverse Lighthouse. Phone: 386-9005.
