A SUMMER OF MUSICALS SPECIAL MOVIE NIGHTS PLANNED AT NORTHPORT COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER SCHEDULE KICKS OFF WITH THAT'S DANCING ON THURSDAY, MAY 8 NORTHPORT, MI
The Northport Community Arts Center is planning to continue its The Flix series with A Summer of Musicals movie nights beginning Thursday, May 8 with the documentary film That's Dancing. Directed by Jack Haley Jr., That's Dancing features Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ray Bolger, Gene Kelly and Sammy Davis Jr. hosting segments of the film and also performing in various clips within the film. Liza Minnelli also hosts a segment of the film. That's Dancing is made up of clips from movie musicals from the late 20s to the break dancing craze of the mid 1980s, when the film was created. It's filled with clips from many of Hollywood's grand musicals featuring June Allyson, Fred Astaire, Lucille Ball, Jennifer Beals, Busby Berkley, James Cagney, Marge and Gower Champion, Leslie Caron, Cyd Charisse, Joan Crawford, Doris Day, Buddy Ebsen and many other entertainment legends.
Movies in the A Summer of Musicals series will be shown on the second and fourth Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m., during May, June, August and September
The schedule is as follows:
May 22: Golddiggers of 1935, filmed in 1935, directed by Busby Berkeley and featuring Dick Powell, Adophe Menjou, Gloria Stuart and Alice Brady.
June 12: On the Town, filmed in 1949, directed by Gene Kelly, Stanley Donen and featuring Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Vera-Ellen, Betty Garrett, Anne Miller and Jules Munshin.
June 26: Kiss Me Kate, filmed in 1953, directed by George Sidney and featuring Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Anne Miller, Keenan Wynn, Bobby Van, James Whitmore and Bob Fosse.
August 14: Carousel, filmed in 1956, directed by Henry King and featuring Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, Cameron Mitchell and Barbara Ruick.
August 28: My Fair Lady, filmed in 1964, directed by George Cukor and featuring Rex Harrison, Audrey Hepburn, Stanley Holloway and Wilfred Hyde-White.
September 11: A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, filmed in 1966, directed by Richard Lester and featuring Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers, Buster Keaton, Jack Gifford, Michael Crawford and Annette Andre.
September 25: How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, filmed in 1967, directed by David Swift and featuring Robert Morse, Michelle Lee, Rudy Vallee, Anthony Teague and Maureen Arthur.
There’s no admission charge for any film in The Flix series, but free will offerings are accepted. All movies are shown at the Northport Community Arts Center. The NCAC is a state of the art, air conditioned auditorium located in the Northport Public School at 104 Wing Street, Northport.
